A Rare Nursery Encounter

This Carpinus Betulus is a cornerstone of our bonsai journey, part of the very first batch of four trees we acquired as nursery material when we began in 2020. A rare find in conventional nurseries, this tree immediately stood out with its perfectly straight trunk—an ideal foundation for the traditional Chokkan (formal upright) style. Its impressive girth, free from major cuts, made it a true gem among ordinary stock.

A hidden surprise lay beneath the surface. When we first acquired the tree, its nebari was completely covered by soil. Only after a careful repotting a year later did we uncover its remarkable base, revealing the strength and character that had been concealed.

Now in the midst of its transformation, we are refining its ramification to fully realize a classic Chokkan form. In 2025, the tree reached another milestone, transitioning into a ceramic container for the first time—a step toward its final, elegant presentation. This bonsai represents not only a discovery but a journey of patience, skill, and appreciation for nature’s hidden beauty.
